Siena and the surrounding

 

Siena is known all over the world for its artistic heritage and the Palio. Its historical centre has been declared a UNESCO human heritage in 1995.

This unique medieval town is located in the centre of Tuscany, surrounded by a hilly countryside between the valleys of the Arbia, Merse and Elsa rivers, the hills of the Chianti region, the Montagnola and the Crete Senesi.  

The most important churches and monuments of Siena are:

the Duomo with the Battistero, the Basilica dell’Osservanza, Santa Maria dei Servi, San Domenico, San Francesco, Santo Spirito, San Bernardo, the Santuario di Santa Caterina and the Synagogue (Siena hosts one of the older Jewish communities in Italy), the Palazzo Arcivescovile, Palazzo Chigi Lucarini Saracini, the Palazzo Comunale, Palazzo Salimbeni – headquarters of the Monte dei Paschi di Siena-, Palazzo Sansedoni, Palazzo Tolomei, the Palazzo del Magnifico, Palazzo Maccari, the Palazzo della Sapienza, Palazzo Patrizi, Piazza del Campo, Palazzo Pubblico, the Torre del Mangia, the Fonte Gaia, the Logge del Papa and the Logge della Mercanzia.

Siena has a rich confectionery tradition. Famous are the panforte, ricciarelli, panpepato, cavallucci. The gastronomy offer the best of the Tuscan cuisine and a very special kind of hand made spaghetti: the pici.

Also basket i san important tradition is Siena withe the Mens Sana which in the last years has dominated the Italian championship  and has been protagonist on the European stage.

The surroundings of Siena are also beautiful and fascinating. On the north there is the Chianti region, a unique area both for the landscape and architectonical characteristics and for the excellence of the wine and olive oil. 

San Gimignano, Monteriggioni, Montepulciano, Montalcino ( its wine is one of the best red wines of the world), Pienza, Cetona, the Val d’Arbia. 

The famous localities that surround Siena are really many and all are of incomparable beauty. The province of Siena, crossed by the Via Francigena, is also very rich in spa areas like  Bagno Vignoni, San Casciano dei Bagni, Chianciano, Bagni San Filippo, Rapolano.
