Florence was funded in the Etruscan period. It was born around 200 bC as a colony of the, at that time, more important town of Fiesole.

Florence, main city of the Granducato di Toscana, earlier with the Medicis and later with the Lorena, was also capital of the Italian kingdom before as capital Rome was named.

By car the city can be easily reached by the A1 or l'A11 ( linked to the Cisa). The centre has many parking places on payment. Many car rentals are also available.
The centre ha san extent of about 4 sqkm, the whole city of about 100 sqkm. Very easy is to visit the centre by feet, by bycicle by bus or taking one of the many taxis available everywhere.
