Florence is located in the centre of Italy, in a great valley surrounded by hills and mountains. It is the major city of Tuscany and has a population of about 400.000 inhabitants.

Florence was funded in the Etruscan period. It was born around 200 bC as a colony of the, at that time, more important town of Fiesole.

Durino the Roman Imperor (Florentia) it became Roman colony and it was utilized to control the Flaminia way, but the real cultural, linguistic, social, political and artistic development took place during the Renaissance in the XIV and XV centuries. In such a period, Florence has strongly influenced the progress of the Italian culture.

Are the two most important male representatives of the family, but how to forget Caterina de’ Medici, wife Enrico II, Queen of France, and the popes Clemente VII and Leone X.

The most representative monuments of the town have been created thanks to them. The Duomo or cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, il Ponte Vecchio, Palazzo Pitti, just to mention only some,and the fact that the most important artits of that period used to work in Florence make it one of the most loved city by the international tourism. Giotto, Cimabue, Caravaggio, Michelangelo, Donatello, Vasari, Masaccio, Brunelleschi, Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci, Filippo Lippi and many others whose works of art can be seen at Uffizi, at the Galleria dell’Accademia, in the chirches and in the hystorical palaces which make Florence unique.

Other important monuments and churches are:

Palazzo Vecchio, the church of San Miniato, Santa Maria Nuova, Santa Croce, la Chiesa di San Lorenzo, with the  Cappelle Medicee, Santo Spirito, the church of il Carmine, the Boboli gardens.

Francesco Petrarca, Niccolò Machiavelli and Dante Alighieri have illuminated the literature of those periods and are stiil nowadays some of the most admired and studied authors.

Florence, main city of the Granducato di Toscana, earlier with the Medicis and later with the Lorena, was also capital of the Italian kingdom before as capital Rome was named.

Rich in restaurants and night life, Florence is also one of the capitals of the fashion.

Ferragamo, Gucci, Roberto Cavalli, Scervino are Fiorentine brands. The city, which started in 1952 withe the fashion shows in the Sala Bianca of Palazzo Pitti, the adventure of the Italian desing and fashion, is still hosting the most important men fashion “Pitti Uomo”.

Dishes like ribollita, pappa al pomodoro, crostini di fegatini, bistecca alla fiorentina, trippa, lampredotto, finocchiona and thousands more typical delicacies can be tasted in the many trattorias in the whole city. Also the haute cuisine has a high reputation in Florence. It hosts one of the most prestigious restaurant of the world: the Enoteca Pinchiorri, which owns since years 3 stars Michelin.

The Florence International airport is Amerigo Vespucci, which is located at Peretola. The main railway stations are Santa Maria Novella, Firenze Rifredi, Firenze Campo di Marte.

By car the city can be easily reached by the A1 or l'A11 ( linked to the Cisa). The centre has many parking places on payment. Many car rentals are also available.

The centre ha san extent of about 4 sqkm, the whole city of about 100 sqkm. Very easy is to visit the centre by feet, by bycicle by bus or taking one of the many taxis available everywhere.
