Arezzo is one of Tuscany’s most elegant and historically significant cities. It is in the South-East part of the region and has borders with Umbria, Emilia-Romagna, the Marche and the Province of Siena.
?
Arezzo’s nickname is “La Città dell’Oro” (the Gold City) and has one of the world’s main gold districts. It is also home to the “Giostra del Saracino”, a historical event dating back to the Middle Ages and second only to the Palio in Siena, as well as the largest flea market in Tuscany, held on the first weekend of every month.
?
The city, which has Etruscan origins, was home to the great poet Francesco Petrarca and boasts works of some of the most famous Renaissance artists such as Piero della Francesca, Giorgio Vasari and Cimabue.
?
In the Province of Arezzo you will find: the Casentino area, home of the source of the River Arno where the battle of Campaldino took place; the town of Poppi with the castle of Count Guidi; La Verna and Camaldoli, two Franciscan hermitages, as well as the marvellous Pieve di Romena, one of the finest exemplaries of Romanesque architecture.
?
The Val di Chiana, well-known for its fruit and vegetable produce and for Chianina, a very high quality bovine meat, is home to the noble town of Cortona, with one of the finest antique exhibitions in Italy held yearly. The city has Etruscan origins and has been featured in many films, such as “Under the Tuscan Sun” and “La Vita è Bella” (“Life is Beautiful”), as well as being the hometown of Jovanotti, a very famous Italian pop singer.
?
Val di Chiana is also home to the towns of Lucignano and Foiano della Chiana, which has one of the most famous carnivals in Tuscany and Foiano Outlet Village, a must for shopping lovers.

The most important town in Valdarno, the area leading towards the Sienese Chianti, is Montevarchi, which is very close to the home of famous fashion label Prada. Here you will find another shopping centre with very competitive prices. In Montevarchi you will also find Bonci, an excellent bakery which produces “Panbriacone”, a kind of panettone soaked in liquor.
?
The town of Sansepolcro is the main town of the Valtiberina area. In this valley you will find Monterchi, home to the famous work by Piero della Francesca “La Madonna del Parto”. Anghieri is also nearby and is one of the most beautiful hamlets in Italy, famous for a bloody battle which inspired a painting by Leonardo da Vinci.
?
Monte San Savino, Castiglion Fiorentino and Cavriglia are just other examples of important and interesting towns. The small town of Caprese Michelangelo is the birthplace of Michelangelo Buonarroti.
